New Member Registration
- Start here to register for a library card. Your account will be pending until we verify your address is in the member area (see below for more details).
- Once confirmed, you will get a temporary account until you provide us with proof of residence (driver’s license with current address, phone bill with your name and address, assessment notice, bank statement, etc.).
- Your library barcode will be sent to the email you provided.
To renew your membership, present proof of residence to staff at the library; or, email email@example.com with your full name, card number, and a photograph of official proof of residence (driver’s license with current address, phone bill with your name and address, assessment notice, bank statement, etc.).
Residents of our area: Salmo and RDCK Area G
SVPL offers membership to all property owners and residents within the Village of Salmo, the Community of Ymir, and Area G of the Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK). This is paid through household taxation.
Residents living outside the taxation areas of the RDCK Area G are required to pay an annual membership fee. There are some areas in Ross Spur and Lost Mountain that do not pay library taxes so are not eligible for a free library card at the SVPL.
Costs for Non-Resident Membership
$50/year for a family in the same household. This fee includes library cards for all members of a family living in a single dwelling, and full borrowing privileges.
For people who are in the area for six (6) months or less, they can signup for a temporary library card with a $50.00 deposit. They will be refunded $25 at the end of the 6 months. Please provide government picture identification with your home address and your temporary local address.
Do you have a valid library card from another BC library? Bring it in along with your picture ID and we can register you as a BC OneCard Member at SVPL. See here for more details.
Library cardholders’ rights and responsibilities
You are responsible for all the materials borrowed on your card and for any charges on items that are overdue, lost, or damaged. (See Loan Periods and Fines for details). Your library card provides access to licensed databases from outside the library. You may also look at our catalogue from home over the Internet, and access your account to place holds, keep lists and renew items.
Lost or stolen cards
If you lose your library card, you are responsible for any items checked out on your card. You must report it as lost immediately and we will block the card so that no one can use it. There is $2.00 replacement cost for a lost card.
Change of address
It is important for us to have your current information. If you change your address or other personal information, contact the library and we’ll update your record. To change your PIN number, log in to your account, click on the "Account Preferences" tab, and change your password. We do not recommend that patrons use a 4 digit number as their password. 4 digit numbers should only be used for temporary passwords and should be changed to something more secure after the account is created.
